Frequently asked questions

How is the list ranking calculated? Why can't I see the ranking algorithm?

The algorithm that ranks people is deliberately hidden, so that the ranking can't be gamed.

Why do we need this list when there are already plenty of open sources about people?

Open information today is contradictory and full of outdated, inaccurate facts. On top of that, every other ranking sorts people within a single group — financiers, CEOs, politicians, and so on. There is no single, high-quality tool for comparing different kinds of influence against each other. That is exactly what humans.top answers.

How do you keep the data behind the ranking and datasets fresh and accurate?

Through daily automated fact checks and weekly manual checks — for example, verifying that links still work, including ones you can't open without a Cloudflare captcha.

What are the use cases for this ranking in third-party projects?

The ranking and datasets can be used as a trustworthy, fresh, high-quality signal about the current, live situation. For full historical coverage, it's best to complement them with larger archives such as Wikidata.

What happens to people who drop out of the top 100 (they die or lose their position)?

If the person is still alive, they move down to the lower part of the ranking and compete with peers like themselves. If they have died, their card is archived and remains only in the ranking-history dataset.

Why does the ranking swing so much for some people?

Most often this is a result of the ranking system continuing to learn: over time accuracy improves and the swings shrink. Far more rarely it reflects genuine changes in influence — people's careers rarely change abruptly; usually these are occasional rises and falls.

Why would I sign in on this site? What do I get?

When you register you are automatically placed in the lower part of the ranking. You also unlock extra features — such as Clubs and History.

What are humans.top Clubs?

Once you sign in, you can create your own humans.top card (on iPhone it can be added to Apple Wallet). The card carries your unique QR code: anyone who owns a club can use it to identify you unambiguously. In the same way, you can create your own clubs, add humans.top members to them, and identify them using the mobile apps.

What is History on humans.top?

History is available only on the website https://humans.top and only to signed-in users. It lets you see the ranking change over time.

How does Promote work? Isn't it just buying your way up the ranking?

Promote lets you rise higher within the lower part of the ranking — among users who weren't added to the list by the standard top-people ranking algorithm. You can't pay your way above the President of the United States.

Why add random people to the list at all? And why should I put my real details on humans.top?

Your name is your brand. Influential people can't be anonymous. What you put in your profile is entirely your choice — humans.top doesn't restrict you, except in cases of overtly provocative or offensive names and wording. The site administration reserves the right to hide such profiles from publication and remove them from the datasets.
